COOKING

For me, cooking is art.
Just like music, you're creating a harmonious composition from many ingredients.

I love to cook, but I'm not a chef.
I cook mostly for myself, sometimes for my closest people, and I keep it simple (i.e. can't do the complicated ones ;)).

I never remember when did I actually start to like cooking.
I remember making pancakes and poffertjes (mini Dutch pancakes) for my family as a child, which was very easy (dad was there to help me :))

I was also cooking quite a lot during my 4 year stay in New Zealand, since eating out off course costs more.
But they were mostly easy ones, cause my time was limited (well, I was there to study, not to cook), as well as my cooking skill. Fried stuff, sauteed veggies, soups and very simple desserts were pretty much it.

After I went back home, I cook whenever I have the time. Well, at some point I didn't cook for years because I didn't have the time and/or motivation.

I started cooking again few months ago, for my family and my boyfriend (the main reason I start cooking again <3) on weekends. Roast chicken, sausage roll, and turkey sandwich were my first dishes.
I didn't expect them to be delicious (trying not to get my hopes to high), at least edible.
But surprisingly, my boyfriend liked them, as well as my parents and my grandma (hope they're for real ;)).
After that I tried other recipes, like roast salmon, roast baby potatoes with herbs (Royce's favorite), and meatloaf.
Whenever I cook for other people, I try my best to make it healthy but still tasty.
I use organic ingredients whenever I could, less salt, good oils, more herbs, and less sugar/sweeteners for the sweet treats.

Now cooking is not just a hobby, but it has became a part of my lifestyle.
Cooking doesn't only force me to be creative (trying out new recipes and experimenting), but it enables me to control my intake.

At first I started with breakfast.
Well, it doesn't take much effort to prepare breakfast, as most of them don't require cooking. Chia seeds, plain yogurt, eggs, boiled carrots and fruits are some of my go-to breakfast menus (see my post on "Breakfast").

After a while, I felt the urge to prepare my own lunch.
So I started by cooking just once or twice a week, and now (I try my best to do) at least 3-4 times a week, sticking to simple and healthy recipes.

The bottom part of the pic above are some of the lunch I cooked (left to right):
  • "Chinese fried rice" style quinoa with diced chicken breast (so no rice)
  • Pesto buckwheat pasta with poached egg and cherry tomatoes
  • Organic noodles with chicken breast and boiled carrots
  • Oven baked pesto chicken with baby carrots
There are tons of recipe on the internet, and there are a lot of healthy recipes too.
Just look them up and try them!
Be creative and healthy at the same time ;)

Just a Thought

I was just driving this early morning to the gym when it suddenly struck me..

"make up to skin is just like exercise to healthy body"

What it means (to me, that is..)..

Being a makeup enthusiast (but not a pro) myself since 5 years ago, I have tried quite a lot of makeup products. Some are good, some are not that good..

Long story short.. learning about make up, it's usefulness and application, I realized that make up works best on a healthy skin..
On a healthy skin, makeup will stick better and perform better, enhancing the good facial parts and hiding the imperfections.

Just like makeup,
exercise works best on a healthy body..
When we are healthy (eat healthily, have enough sleep, and manage our stress well), doing exercise will be the "cherry on top", best result will be achieved!

Remember..

You can not out-exercise a bad diet
You can't exercise away a bad diet
You can't exercise your way out of a bad diet
You can't out-train a bad diet

DIET / HEALTHY LIVING RELATED QUESTIONS

First of all, I would like to thank my friends who have given me interesting questions.
They have inspired me to read more, and learn more.

Before reading the questions and their answers, please bear in mind that my answers are mostly based on my personal experience and/or readings.
I am neither a professional nutritionist nor a personal trainer. So when in doubt, please consult the pros.

Basically, I've been trying to implement this "healthy living" or "healthy lifestyle" for approximately 6 months, gradually.
Improvements are still needed here and there off course (never ending learning process), but I feel better already.

And I feel that it is unfair for me to keep it for myself.
I've received the info from those who have done it, and I'd like to pass it on to those who want to know.
"Sharing is caring", right?

So here we go..
The questions and their answers..

What is the best way to lose weight? Cardio or weight lifting? [RH-FB]

Things you need to know to lose weight:
  • Calories: You will lose weight if the calories you burn > the calories you consume.
  • Food and nutrition: It is important for us to consume healthy food that contains good nutrition in order to lose weight.
  • Workout: An important part of diet that must be done to lose weight. By working out, you will not only burn the calories, you’re also burn the fat and gain muscles, and improve your health.
  • Term/duration: instead of losing weight rapidly, aim for a sustainable weight loss that could be achieved by changing your lifestyle. Rapid weight loss usually doesn’t last, and mostly you ended up gaining more, while slow weight loss is more sustainable.
Based on my experience and what I've read so far, both should be done.
Cardio exercise provides increased endurance, muscle stamina, and weight loss.
Weight lifting (or resistance training) improves strength, muscle tone, and lean body mass, which is advantageous for losing weight.

For the most successful weight loss experience, integrate both cardio and weight-lifting in an intensive workout program.

How to lose belly fat? [RHS-FB]

  • Exercise (the 30%): Exercise to burn your fat, not just your belly fat, but your overall fat. For belly exercises, don’t just do crunches, but do planks, Russian twists, and other belly exercises too.
  • Clean eating (the 70%):The biggest factor yet perceived as the most difficult thing to do. Replace your bad food with healthy ones. Consume more protein, vegetables, whole grains products, and avoid sugar, as it is our enemy. Include good fat in your diet that is rich in Omega 3’s, such as salmon, avocados and walnuts.
  • Sleep: Sleep deprivation could result in the increase of cortisol level that could promote the development of insulin resistance. Because of this, you are more likely to crave for sugar and other fat building food. Getting enough sleep is important for weight loss.

What is the right diet to enhance memory? [LW-FB]

Our brain needs fuel, just like our body. Diet that involves healthy food such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats (olive oil, fish, etc.) will not only improve your health, but also your memory.

Food-wise, here’s what you should & shouldn’t eat to boost your memory:
  • Consume Omega-3s, from salmon, tuna, mackerel, or walnuts, flaxseeds, spinach, broccoli, etc.
  • Limit calories and saturated fat (red meat, milk, butter, cheese, ice cream, etc.) to avoid concentration and memory problems.
  • Eat more fruit (e.g. bananas, apricots, mangoes, cantaloupe, and watermelon) and leafy green vegetables (e.g. spinach, broccoli, romaine lettuce).
  • Drink green tea, as it has powerful antioxidants that protect against free radicals that can damage brain cells.
In addition, these are also important if you want to enhance your memory even more:
  • Physical exercise increases oxygen to your brain and reduces the risk for disorders that lead to memory loss
  • Enough sleep is necessary for memory consolidation
  • Manage your stress, as it is one of the brain’s worst enemies. Chronic stress destroys brain cells and damages your memory.

Is it OK to drink coffee before working out? [CP-PM]

Actually coffee is one of the most effective pre-workout drinks, because caffeine is a stimulant, but as long as you drink it without the cream and sugar.
It will accelerate fat loss, increase performance and improve focus.
Drink (just) a cup, approximately an hour before workout for best effect.

They say juice contains a lot of sugar, and must be added with something to reduce it. I usually add oatmeal. Does it work? Or is there any other way? [CP-PM]

Based on my experience and what I know, bottled/packaged juice contains a lot of sugar. Adding oatmeal or anything won’t reduce the sugar level.

It is best to drink fresh fruit/vegetable juice with no sugar or milk added. However, each fruit/vegetable contains different level of sugar. Fruits like mango, lychee, pomegranate, and vegetables like carrot and beets contain more sugar than the others. So the sugar consumed in a juice serving depends on the combination of fruits and vegetables used. Don’t go overboard with the juice, keep it according to your needs.

For serving size, please consult a nutritionist/doctor.

I’d like to start working out in a gym. Where do I start? [CP-PM]

In my experience:
  • Cardio: I started with easy cardio, like 15-20 mins on the treadmill, or taking the beginners’ class (I find classes like bodyjam or zumba is easier than body combat)
  • Weight training: it is best to ask for guidance from PT, so they can address the right machines for the right muscles (targeted muscles), and how to use them. Wrong moves will not only make your workout ineffective, but could cause problems in your muscles and joints.
I suggest you to consult this thoroughly with a PT (they usually give a few free sessions for new members).

How to use olive oil (wisely)? [CP-PM]

Basically you can use olive oil in any way you like, as salad dressings, bread dips, to sauté, to fry, even to deep-fry. Just keep in mind the flavor of the oil, whether it will ruin the taste of your dish or not.
There are misconceptions that heat could destroy the nutrients in olive oil. The fact is, high quality extra virgin olive oil can be heated to 420°F or 215°C, higher than most vegetable oil.
Go for extra virgin olive oil, as it has less process than the regular olive oil (hence, healthier!).

My husband goes to the gym every day, but he still gains weight, even though now he doesn't eat dinner. [CP-PM]

Firstly, for a regular gym goer, he shouldn’t just focus on the weight alone. But also take into account the chest size, neck size, waistline, the way he fits into his clothes, and other ways of measuring your body.
Next, the volume of 1 kg of fat is bigger than 1 kg of muscle. So it is possible that you gained weight, but actually leaner.

1 pound of fat vs. 1 pound of muscle
Gym usually has those scales that could measure not just your overall weight, but also your fat mass and percentage, muscle mass, metabolic age, etc. Just ask the gym personnel to help you with this.

Do not skip any meal! If you skip meal, your metabolism will slow down, your body will go to “hungry” state and will enter “fat-storing” mode. This will cause your body to store more fat instead of burning it (hence, the weight gain).
Eat regularly (breakfast-lunch-dinner), or if you could, eat 5-8 small portions of food.
Pay attention to what you eat too. Mind your calories intake and maintain a healthy/balanced diet.
Remember, diet is not “not-eating”.
Personal experience: I lost more fat after I eat all three meals regularly and wisely. Hope to lose more (fat, not weight) ;)

Short but Meaningful Conversation in the Morning

Had a conversation with a personal trainer at the gym this morning.
Started off just as "chit-chat", but at the end, it actually confirmed what I've read/experienced so far..

Eating healthily without any exercise could make you healthier, but not fit / toned / lean..
However, no matter how hard/often you exercise, if you don't eat healthily, you won't get healthier..

So.......... Do both!!

Eat healthily and exercise intelligently :)

DETOX

Detoxification of detox is basically the removal of toxic substances from a living organism, including, but not limited to, humans

Why do we have to detox?
Consciously or not, we consume food and drinks that have bad items for our body. Doing detox helps counteract those less healthy items.

Some people do short and intense detoxes. But I personally been incorporating "detox" in my daily life.

Here are some suggestions for daily detox:
  • Warm lemon water: first thing in the morning, drink a cup of warm water with lemon
  • Fresh juice: on an empty stomach, so your body will absorb it better
  • Detox tea: drinkable throughout the day
  • Apple cider vinegar: alkalizes the body and detox the liver
  • Eat clean: incorporate fiber and avoid refined sugars, processed foods, alcohol, caffeine and non-organic fruits and veggies
  • Sweat: exercise, sauna, or yoga to remove toxins
In addition to daily detox, here are some detox methods that are also very relaxing ;)
  • Detox bath: a relaxing way to remove toxins
  • Massage: to increase circulation, stimulate the lymphatic system and remove toxic build-up.
Furthermore, here are some detox drinks for cleansing and weight loss:
  • Matcha Mango Pineapple Smoothie
  • Pomegranate Pineapple Lemon Juice
  • Love Your Greens Juice – cucumber, spinach, basically the greens
  • Dieter’s Dream Water – water infused with fruits and/or vegetables
  • Super Hydration Juice – berries and apples
  • Red And Green Festive Cocktail – kale + pomegranate
  • Rainbow Veggie Juice –tomatoes and peppers + carrots + lemons + celery + parsley + romaine + cilantro
  • Citrus & Green Tea Detox Smoothie
  • Golden Detox Drink – Turmeric + Ginger + organic lemon juice + cayenne pepper
  • Grapefruit-Cado Sunrise Smoothie – grapefruit + avocado
  • Detox Blueberry Fruit Smoothie – blueberry + banana
  • Orange Surprise – carrot + celery + apples + lime
  • Green Smoothie – avocado + cucumber + flax seed (optional for omega-3)
  • Drink Your Veggies Pizza – tomatoes + peppers + kale
  • Ayurveda Detoxifying Tea – cumin + coriander + fennel
  • Mango Ginger Lemonade
  • Love Your Liver Juice – beets
  • Detox Beet and Carrot Smoothie
  • Detox Smoothie – spinach + pineapple juice + lemon
  • Low Carb Green Smoothie - wheat grass + spinach + liquid stevia, almond butter and coconut water (optional)
  • Spring Cleaning Detox – flax seed + apples + carrots + ginger root
  • Honey Drink with Ginger and Lemon
  • Beet Juice Smoothie – beets + banana
  • Citrus Smoothies – lemons + limes + oranges + tangerines
  • Green Lemonade – kale + apples
  • Cranberry Bliss Detox Smoothie – cranberry + pears + apples + turmeric
  • Natural Daily Detox Remedy Drink – apple cider vinegar + lemon
  • Lemon Ginger Detox Drink

I have tried several recipes mentioned above. Honestly, some do taste good, and some don't.
I drank them anyway, knowing that they're for my own good (mindset!).

Anyway, my daily detox routine is including:

Apple cider vinegar + lemon
When buying ACV, chose the brand that has “the mother” in it. I always buy Bragg, because it has "the mother" and it's also organic. For lemons, simply buy the best ones you could get.
At first I hesitated on drinking this, as I have the history of quite-bad gastric problem.
But after reading many articles, I've learned that both ingredients, even though they're sour, are not acidic but alkaline. Drinking them alkalizes your body and counter those acid came from the food/drink you've consumed (e.g. coffee).
Note: however, if you have bad gastric problem, I suggest you to consult with your doctor prior to doing this.

Infused water
The easiest and simplest way to detox. Basically I infused my 2,5 litters of water with lemon and/or frozen berries. You could also use: lime, orange, cucumber, mint leaves, etc.
The nutrients from the fruits will be absorbed by the water, and it'll have nice flavor too.

After doing this for a while, in conjunction with exercising 3-5 times a week, and (the effort of) clean eating, my body feels better and I feel a lot healthier. I also slowly lost some weight, although my goal is no longer to lose weight, but to be healthy.

But overall, I feel a lot better :)

MILK

Milk is the primary source of nutrition for young mammals before they are able to digest other types of food.
Just like other mammals, the first thing consumed by human is also milk (breast milk). As we grow up, we no longer consume breast milk, and mostly switch to cow milk.

I'm a milk-person myself. Growing up, my mom gave me and my brother milk every day.
Up until today, milk is a "must-have" item in our fridge.

Non-Fat / Skim Milk, healthy or not?

As I enter my "womanhood", I began to pay more attention towards my appearance. My constant goal for years is "to lose weight".
One of the efforts I did in the past (for years) is switching from whole/full-cream milk to low-fat/skim milk.

But only recently I came to realize that the so-called healthy milk is not healthier than the whole/full-cream milk.
Turns out, we also need the fat contained in the milk.

Here are some facts about non-fat / skim milk:
  • Less nutrients are absorbed without the fat. The nutrients in milk, vitamins D, E, and A, are fat-soluble, which means your body absorbs them better when they're delivered via fat. What's more, the vitamin K found naturally in butterfat gets left behind altogether.
  • Skim and low-fat milk contain powdered milk, which is made with oxidized cholesterol, a carcinogen. Oxidized cholesterol can contribute to the build-up of plaque in your arteries. On the other hand, untreated cholesterol in whole milk is an antioxidant.
  • Milk producers have started adding sugary flavoring to skim and low-fat milk to encourage kids to drink more of it. This means more empty calories in milk that releases fewer nutrients into your body.
  • Skim can leave you feeling unsatisfied, which leads many people to fill up on less-healthy "non-fat" foods. This is because saturated fats like those found in whole milk trigger the release of the hormone cholecystokinin, which makes you feel full.
  • Skim milk has been linked with "transient" weight loss in studies. This means you may lose some weight from cutting out whole milk at first, but then you're likely to gain back that weight.
  • Fats slow the release of sugar into your bloodstream, reducing the amount that can be stored as fat. This is an argument for letting some "healthy" fats into your daily diet overall, and they don't have to come from milk. They can come from olive oil and nuts, for example.
So if you drink cow milk, I suggest you to drink the whole milk instead of low-fat / skim ones.
Alternatively, you can drink soy, almond, or hazelnut milk as dairy substitutes.

Dairy Alternatives / Substitutes

It's been almost a year since I switch from cow milk to these dairy substitutes (most of the time), which are soy, almond and recently hazelnut milk.

I've always been a fan of soy milk, and I have no problem drinking it since I have no thyroid problem. For soy milk, I prefer the organic unsweetened ones.

But ever since I got introduced to almond milk, I immediately fell in love with it.
Not because of the trend, but simply because I like it.
it suits my personal taste, subtle nutty flavor, not too thick, not sweet, and most importantly, healthy.

Currently I drink almond milk more than any other milk, despite the fact that almond milk costs more than cow milk and soy milk. I personally consider it as an investment to a healthier life.
Besides, being sick costs more!

I get my raw almond milk from these producers/places:

Yourganic
Available in basic variants (Sweet-dates, Matcha, Rockin' Iced Coffee) and Exelicious Flavour (their ever changing adventurous flavor), you can purchase them at stores or you can have them delivered to you.
Visit yourganic's blog or instagram account @Yourganic for more info.

Organic Crush
Available in original flavor as well as sweet-dates, coconut cinnamon, and chocolate (my favorite!), you can have them delivered to you, or you can visit their flagship retail booth at Grand Indonesia.
Visit Organicrush's page or instagram account @organicrush for more info.

Gwen's Kitchen
Available in original and sweet-dates flavors, they come in several packaging (bottle, pouch and plastic glass container). You can have them delivered to you, or you can pick them up at Bless Nature's Best, where you can have super delicious almond-milk based smoothies there.
My personal favorite is choco-ban almond milk smoothies!
Visit Gwen's Kitchen page or instagram account @blessnaturesbest for more info.

Just recently that I've read about hazelnut milk from a friend's blog.
Curious about it, so I gave it a try.
I liked it, and it went straight to my "dairy substitutes" list.
It has a slightly-strong-but-not-overpowering yummy nutty flavor (kinda like nutella, but not sweet), and the texture is not too thick.

I bought my hazelnut milk from Dama
Available in pure and slightly sweetened flavor, you can have them delivered to you.
Dama also makes almond milk, with various flavors: pure, slightly sweetened, earl grey, ginger, and carob.
Visit Dama's page or instagram account @damaeats for more info.

At the end of the day, the kind of milk that you should consume is basically depends on your preference, your need/goal, and/or your health condition.

Here are some info about milk, for your consideration:

BREAKFAST

"Breakfast is the most important meal of the day"

I've heard that saying so many times, yet I have never actually believed in it, until recently.

For years and years, I've always skipped breakfast.
I didn't know why, but I was feeling that if I skip breakfast, it'll be easier to lose weight.

Well.. I did lose some weight, but somehow I couldn't keep it.
I keep on gaining shortly afterwards, sometimes even more than what I've lost.

It took me a heartbreak, few diet methods, and a lot of reading to realize that breakfast is very important, and we shouldn't skip it (well, never skip ANY meal actually).

Why is breakfast important?
It provides you with the energy and nutrients that you need to function on your work/study/other activities, and it is important in maintaining a healthy body weight.

What is 'bad breakfast'?
  • Too much carbohydrate: consuming too much carb, especially simple carb (e.g. white rice, white bread, etc.) can spike your blood sugar level. This could lead to 'cravings' throughout the day.
  • Having nothing: skipping breakfast is a very big mistake. When you skip breakfast and go too long without eating, your body goes into 'starvation' (fat storing) mode. Later on, when you eat (and probably overeat because you haven't eat anything), your body will take all the fat from your meal and store it. Not to forget, you will experience cravings too.
So never skip your breakfast, and eat the right food for breakfast!

Some healthy breakfast ideas:
  • Whole grain products
  • Oats
  • Eggs (omelette/poached/boiled, preferably organic ones)
  • Fruits
  • Fresh juice or smoothies (fruits and/or greens, sugarless)
  • Chia seeds (see my previous post on this)
  • Milk (cow/soy/almond/hazelnut, depends on your preference and/or condition)
What to avoid for breakfast:
  • Simple carbs: white bread, white rice, porridge, donuts, pastries, muffins, bagels, etc
  • Cereals (sorry, but they are high on sugar)
  • Bottled juice and other fruit drinks (also high on sugar and preservatives)
  • Fried food: sausages, bacon, butter-fried eggs, hash browns or fries, etc.

Now.. A li'l bit personal..
What do I usually have for my breakfast?

Ever since I got into this "healthy living" style, I prepare my own breakfast, most of the time. That way, I can really control my intake.
I try to switch between menus, and constantly looking for other healthy breakfast recipes.
The option is limitless, just be creative!

Here are some of my breakfast menus:
Left to right:
smoothies & omelette; chia seeds with almond milk, honey and berries; boiled eggs, boiled veggies with vegan mayo, and unsweetened soymilk; and hazelnut milk

So remember..
"Breakfast is the most important meal of the day"
Don't skip it!!
