MILK

Milk is the primary source of nutrition for young mammals before they are able to digest other types of food.
Just like other mammals, the first thing consumed by human is also milk (breast milk). As we grow up, we no longer consume breast milk, and mostly switch to cow milk.

I'm a milk-person myself. Growing up, my mom gave me and my brother milk every day.
Up until today, milk is a "must-have" item in our fridge.

Non-Fat / Skim Milk, healthy or not?

As I enter my "womanhood", I began to pay more attention towards my appearance. My constant goal for years is "to lose weight".
One of the efforts I did in the past (for years) is switching from whole/full-cream milk to low-fat/skim milk.

But only recently I came to realize that the so-called healthy milk is not healthier than the whole/full-cream milk.
Turns out, we also need the fat contained in the milk.

Here are some facts about non-fat / skim milk:
  • Less nutrients are absorbed without the fat. The nutrients in milk, vitamins D, E, and A, are fat-soluble, which means your body absorbs them better when they're delivered via fat. What's more, the vitamin K found naturally in butterfat gets left behind altogether.
  • Skim and low-fat milk contain powdered milk, which is made with oxidized cholesterol, a carcinogen. Oxidized cholesterol can contribute to the build-up of plaque in your arteries. On the other hand, untreated cholesterol in whole milk is an antioxidant.
  • Milk producers have started adding sugary flavoring to skim and low-fat milk to encourage kids to drink more of it. This means more empty calories in milk that releases fewer nutrients into your body.
  • Skim can leave you feeling unsatisfied, which leads many people to fill up on less-healthy "non-fat" foods. This is because saturated fats like those found in whole milk trigger the release of the hormone cholecystokinin, which makes you feel full.
  • Skim milk has been linked with "transient" weight loss in studies. This means you may lose some weight from cutting out whole milk at first, but then you're likely to gain back that weight.
  • Fats slow the release of sugar into your bloodstream, reducing the amount that can be stored as fat. This is an argument for letting some "healthy" fats into your daily diet overall, and they don't have to come from milk. They can come from olive oil and nuts, for example.
So if you drink cow milk, I suggest you to drink the whole milk instead of low-fat / skim ones.
Alternatively, you can drink soy, almond, or hazelnut milk as dairy substitutes.

Dairy Alternatives / Substitutes

It's been almost a year since I switch from cow milk to these dairy substitutes (most of the time), which are soy, almond and recently hazelnut milk.

I've always been a fan of soy milk, and I have no problem drinking it since I have no thyroid problem. For soy milk, I prefer the organic unsweetened ones.

But ever since I got introduced to almond milk, I immediately fell in love with it.
Not because of the trend, but simply because I like it.
it suits my personal taste, subtle nutty flavor, not too thick, not sweet, and most importantly, healthy.

Currently I drink almond milk more than any other milk, despite the fact that almond milk costs more than cow milk and soy milk. I personally consider it as an investment to a healthier life.
Besides, being sick costs more!

I get my raw almond milk from these producers/places:

Yourganic
Available in basic variants (Sweet-dates, Matcha, Rockin' Iced Coffee) and Exelicious Flavour (their ever changing adventurous flavor), you can purchase them at stores or you can have them delivered to you.
Visit yourganic's blog or instagram account @Yourganic for more info.

Organic Crush
Available in original flavor as well as sweet-dates, coconut cinnamon, and chocolate (my favorite!), you can have them delivered to you, or you can visit their flagship retail booth at Grand Indonesia.
Visit Organicrush's page or instagram account @organicrush for more info.

Gwen's Kitchen
Available in original and sweet-dates flavors, they come in several packaging (bottle, pouch and plastic glass container). You can have them delivered to you, or you can pick them up at Bless Nature's Best, where you can have super delicious almond-milk based smoothies there.
My personal favorite is choco-ban almond milk smoothies!
Visit Gwen's Kitchen page or instagram account @blessnaturesbest for more info.

Just recently that I've read about hazelnut milk from a friend's blog.
Curious about it, so I gave it a try.
I liked it, and it went straight to my "dairy substitutes" list.
It has a slightly-strong-but-not-overpowering yummy nutty flavor (kinda like nutella, but not sweet), and the texture is not too thick.

I bought my hazelnut milk from Dama
Available in pure and slightly sweetened flavor, you can have them delivered to you.
Dama also makes almond milk, with various flavors: pure, slightly sweetened, earl grey, ginger, and carob.
Visit Dama's page or instagram account @damaeats for more info.

At the end of the day, the kind of milk that you should consume is basically depends on your preference, your need/goal, and/or your health condition.

Here are some info about milk, for your consideration:

BREAKFAST

"Breakfast is the most important meal of the day"

I've heard that saying so many times, yet I have never actually believed in it, until recently.

For years and years, I've always skipped breakfast.
I didn't know why, but I was feeling that if I skip breakfast, it'll be easier to lose weight.

Well.. I did lose some weight, but somehow I couldn't keep it.
I keep on gaining shortly afterwards, sometimes even more than what I've lost.

It took me a heartbreak, few diet methods, and a lot of reading to realize that breakfast is very important, and we shouldn't skip it (well, never skip ANY meal actually).

Why is breakfast important?
It provides you with the energy and nutrients that you need to function on your work/study/other activities, and it is important in maintaining a healthy body weight.

What is 'bad breakfast'?
  • Too much carbohydrate: consuming too much carb, especially simple carb (e.g. white rice, white bread, etc.) can spike your blood sugar level. This could lead to 'cravings' throughout the day.
  • Having nothing: skipping breakfast is a very big mistake. When you skip breakfast and go too long without eating, your body goes into 'starvation' (fat storing) mode. Later on, when you eat (and probably overeat because you haven't eat anything), your body will take all the fat from your meal and store it. Not to forget, you will experience cravings too.
So never skip your breakfast, and eat the right food for breakfast!

Some healthy breakfast ideas:
  • Whole grain products
  • Oats
  • Eggs (omelette/poached/boiled, preferably organic ones)
  • Fruits
  • Fresh juice or smoothies (fruits and/or greens, sugarless)
  • Chia seeds (see my previous post on this)
  • Milk (cow/soy/almond/hazelnut, depends on your preference and/or condition)
What to avoid for breakfast:
  • Simple carbs: white bread, white rice, porridge, donuts, pastries, muffins, bagels, etc
  • Cereals (sorry, but they are high on sugar)
  • Bottled juice and other fruit drinks (also high on sugar and preservatives)
  • Fried food: sausages, bacon, butter-fried eggs, hash browns or fries, etc.

Now.. A li'l bit personal..
What do I usually have for my breakfast?

Ever since I got into this "healthy living" style, I prepare my own breakfast, most of the time. That way, I can really control my intake.
I try to switch between menus, and constantly looking for other healthy breakfast recipes.
The option is limitless, just be creative!

Here are some of my breakfast menus:
Left to right:
smoothies & omelette; chia seeds with almond milk, honey and berries; boiled eggs, boiled veggies with vegan mayo, and unsweetened soymilk; and hazelnut milk

So remember..
"Breakfast is the most important meal of the day"
Don't skip it!!

CHIA SEEDS

This tiny things have been my favorite breakfast menu for a while.
Came across it when watching some youtube health gurus' videos and decided to give it a try.

Chia seeds come from a flowering plant in the mint family that's native to Mexico and Guatemala, and history suggests it was a very important food crop for the Aztecs.

Known as one of the superfoods, chia seeds has lots of benefits, as shown below:

You can basically add chia seeds to anything, since its tasteless and wont affect the flavor of whatever that you're having.
You can sprinkle them on your salad or toast, add them in your smoothies or salad, or like me, you can soak them and eat them like pudding for breakfast :)

Here's my way of having chia seeds..
I actually got many recipes from youtube and/or websites, but I prefer to have it simple (but yummy!).

Basically all I do is soak approximately 2 tablespoons of chia seeds overnight in a liquid base of choice:
  • Almond milk: original or flavored
  • Soymilk: preferable unsweetened, or you could add stevia/agave/honey as the sweetener
  • Coconut water
  • Others, the choice is limitless! (but keep it healthy)
The amount of liquid used is depend on how firm or runny you want the pudding to be.
Use less liquid for a firmer pudding, or more liquid for a runnier pudding.

It keeps me full until lunch time and prevent me from snacking :)

Go and give it a try!!

BEFORE I GO ON A TRIP

Yeaaahhh!!!
Today is Friday and tomorrow I'm going on a 4-days trip to Surabaya-Malang-Batu with my beloved ones!

This would be our second trip.
The first trip was on September 2013, where we went to Singapore for 3 days-2 nights.
Singapore Trip - September 2013
This time, we decided to have a domestic trip.
Why?
Why not?
Indonesia has a lot of interesting places to go to.

When going on trips, I usually expand my "tolerance" a bit, especially towards food.
Because.. Who wants to miss out on local culinary?
However, this does not mean I will eat everything.
I will try to eat wisely and will avoid rice/sugary/oily food as much as possible.

Not to forget, since I started this "healthy lifestlye" thing, whenever I travel, I always bring either my running shoes and/or swimsuit. So I can exercise whenever I could.
Stay committed!

Have a nice weekend people!!
See you next week :)

MY INSPIRATIONS

After putting some thoughts about "what to write" today, I've decided to (still) talk about what made me do what I do (the "healthy lifestyle" attempt ),

Who are my inspirations?
Honestly, inspiration could come from anywhere and whoever.

But before I get to that, I just want to say that I had a good morning!

Why? Simple, I went to the gym, did my workout. At the end of my workout, the guy who used to be my personal trainer, Sancaka, told me to go on the scale.
So I went on it.

The result was quite good. Although my muscle mass decreased since the last month (I had a heavy flu that made me rest for a week) my fat % and my metabolic age decreased!
After going to the gym for a while, I don't really care about my (overall) weight. Because your weight does not define the fitness of your body (unless you're overweight). There are other things you should take into account, like your measurements, and the way your clothes fit you.

Ok back to "my inspirations"

I have quite a few people that inspire me.
I'll try to start from the closest people.

My first inspirations ever, they are.. my parents!
Budiman Family
Left to Right: Vedie/Bulie, Nasya (sis-in-law), Kharis (beloved niece!), Papa Butje, Mama Vera, Me(!), and babybro Vicky
As you can see in the pic above, that was taken on August 2013, my parents are both in good shape. They are no longer young, they'd be 59 and 58 years old this year, but they look a lot younger than that.

Their secrets? Up until today, they still exercise and eat relatively healthy.
My dad, the pilot, exercises almost everyday. He either jogs, swims, cycles or plays golf, mostly in the morning. My mom does power walk, swims, cycles or cleans the house (believe me this is a toughie!).
Ever since we (the kids) were young, they've encouraged us to do sport. That's how I became a swimming athlete.
They also taught us to eat healthily, including to eat a lot of veggies and fruits.
If me and my brothers look good (I hope I do), that's because of our parents.

My brothers also inspire me, a lot!
Bulie, my 30 year old brother, runs a lot, cycles, and does other exercises. He also eats relatively healthy.
While Vicky, my 22 year old (baby)brother, goes regularly to the gym and eats healthily too. Not to mention cycles a lot, since in the past 2 years he's been studying in Netherlands.

So my family is my biggest support system. We continuously encourage each other to live healthily.

Next are.. my friends!
Over the last few months, it is my friends who's been inspiring me to do "healthy lifestyle".
Through their posts on social media (instagram/twitter/path/facebook) or through sharing.

Who are they?

Igor (Saykoji) and Tessy Penyami
I remember last year they posted pictures of their progress after doing insanity workout.
They're awesome!!
This couple inspires me in many ways! Keep up the good work guys.
FYI, their ig's are: @saykoji & @tessypenyami

Vita Siregar
Mentioned her name in my first post. She's the "Blekros Diet" lady.
She was chubby sometime ago, but now? Looking super awesome!!
Not only doing a healthy diet, she also works out almost every day.. Talking about commitment!
Just looking at her ig posts makes me want to go back to the gym and work out some more, LOL!
Curious about her, her lifestlye and her diet program? Go to http://www.blekrosdiet.com/

Itai Leffler
He's relatively a new friend of mine. We met because I'm a fan of his product, duepunti http://www.duepunti.co.id/Somehow we started chatting, and became friends afterwards.
Similar to the friends mentioned above, his posts (ig: @ishape_indo) are super inspiring!
The guy behind http://ishapeindo.com/ is also my mentor in "healthy lifestyle". When in doubt, or when I'm curious about health-related matters, he's the one I'm going to (thanks Itai!).

There are other friends or acquaintances who also inspire me to continuously workout and/or eat clean, like Michael Kho, Aditama "Tameng" (@mengtameng), Mia Nainggolan (@mia_nainggolan), Hannah (@hannahalrashid), and Cindy Lao (@cindycilo).

For inspiring me, I thank all of you..
And I hope you will keep on inspiring others too!!

Last but not least.. The healthy people on youtube!
I've been a youtube fan for a long time now. I found a lot of inspirations and information from it.
There are lots of people who share their lifestyle on youtube, but the people I'm about to mention are my favorite ones.

Leansecrets by Brenda Leigh Turner
This pretty lady (Latina version of Scarlett Johansson, in my opinion) does not only share a lot of exercise tips, but also share a lot of great healthy recipes.

TheLeanMachines by John Chapman and Leon Bustin
Similar to Brenda, these two British guys are sharing a lot of exercise tips and healthy recipes.
Watch their videos and enjoy their thick accent (I know I do)!!

damienwalters by Damien Walters
He's a world famous British freerunner, stuntman, and gymnast.
Watching him doing all those jumps is very entertaining and eye-pleasing ;)

Saving the best for last..
nashmedia by Frank Medrano
The vegan body builder with superhuman strength!!
When it comes to this guy, I'm speechless..
Just watch his videos or visit his website http://www.thefrankmedrano.com/

Those are the people that inspire me the most.
To exercise, to eat clean, to do "healthy lifestyle".

I realize that this is a never-ending journey, filled with struggles and temptations.
So I keep motivating myself, over and over again!

SOME GOOD TIPS

As my last post on my first day of blogging, here are some good tips I found on the internet, from various sources :)

GENERALLY.. THIS IS WHAT I DO

As the first post after that "The Introduction" post, sebelum ngomongin hal-hal lain, I would like to share to you what I do/apply in my life.

Warning! They may not be perfect, tapi saya consider ini sebagai progress (dari yang dulunya kurang baik) dan semoga ke depan lebih baik lagi.

Ok, here we go..

The rules:
  • Never skip any meal: eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner!
  • Choose wisely what to eat and drink!
  • Workout 3-5 times a week, at the gym or at home, no excuse!
  • Always have enough rest the night before workout (for me at least 6 hours sleep. Less than that, no workout!)
  • Drink at least 3 litres of water a day
  • Manage the stress (pray, meditate, relaxation, etc.)
Mungkin pas dibaca sepertinya ga susah (atau susah banget?). But trust me, butuh beberapa bulan untuk saya menjalankan hal-hal di atas secara konsisten.

What I did, and continue on doing:
  • I change my mindset: saya mengadopsi mindset "hidup sehat sangatlah penting".
  • I set my target(s): to set certain target(s) is also important. Apa yang mau dicapai? In my case, I want to be healthy, look good (toned body), and feel good.
Believe me, I'm still struggling too! Perasaan-perasaan seperti malas bangun pagi, pengen nyemil, males olahraga, kadang masih ada. Tapi sedapat mungkin stick to that commitment!
Just some examples of what I do to stick to my commitment :)

THE INTRODUCTION

Today I've made a decision, and it is...
to BLOG!!
*hahaha.. whatta lame first sentences on my blog*
Anyway, don't expect me to use fancy smart words, don't expect me to be 100% perfect in grammar and/or spelling.. I'll just write what I want to (switching languages should be expected) and hopefully I'll get the message across correctly..

Kenapa tiba-tiba terpikir untuk nge-blog ya?
Well, been thinking about it..
Tapi dulu-dulu bingung, "emangnya mau share apaan sih?"

Sekarang baru ada "things to share"-nya..

For those who don't know me..
Let me introduce myself first :)

My name is Vebie Amanda Budiman..
I was born October 2nd, 1981 in Jakarta, Indonesia
The eldest and the only girl of three siblings
I have a relatively normal-happy life, with ups and downs (who doesn't?)

Beberapa bulan terakhir mencoba mendalami banget yang namanya "healthy lifestyle", that includes: makan bersih, olahraga, tidur cukup, dan menghindari stress.

Basically my daily routine beberapa bulan terakhir is like this:
  • Woke up at 5.00 AM, prepare myself and my things, then I go to the gym
My morning drive views, it's calming (since no heavy traffic yet)
Workout at the gym 6.00-7.15'ish AM, take a shower and drive to the office

selfie with my dearest friend, Rambo
  • Work from 8.30 AM - 5.30 PM, but it depends on the workload and/or traffic
  • Drive home, with occasional stop at the supermarket to do groceries
  • Arrived at home, and do these things: cook, a bit of laundry, and prepare the things i need for the next day..
Pretty boring maybe?
Not for me..

To get to that routine, it took me few months filled with adjustments..
Hmmm.. ceritanya gimana ya?

Semua berawal dari sebuah peristiwa yang membuat saya down banget..
Sangking down-nya, saya ga bisa makan hampir 2 minggu. Setiap makan cuma 1-2 suap, trus ditinggal.
Setelah itu pula secara ga kebetulan ngobrol juga sama ade saya, Vedie (from now on it's 'Bulie'). Dia cerita pengalamannya dia Puasa Daniel, yaitu 21 hari hanya makan sayuran dan buah (based on the bible).
Saya pikir, "it's a great idea! Saya bisa mendekatkan diri sama Tuhan, menyembuhkan semua luka batin dan mempersehat badan yang beberapa bulan sebelumnya diisi dengan makanan-minuman ga sehat!".

So, I started 'Puasa Daniel' kira-kira di bulan Agustus pertengahan.
It was challenging, tapi since I like challenges, I managed to do it, secara baik.

Kira-kira 'aturan main'nya seperti berikut:

  • Semua produk makanan olahan

Sounds difficult?

Setelah Puasa Daniel selesai, what's next?

I was 'out there', but at least I was happy and I look better.

Until one day I stumbled upon an instagram account, blekros diet.
Ternyata si empunya account itu perempuan yang saya kenal sejak SMP, namanya Vita Siregar.
Di account tersebut disebutkan bahwa dia provide catering untuk mereka yang mau ikutan "Mayo Clinic Diet" (look them up: http://www.mayoclinic.org ) dan lose 4-7kgs dalam 13 hari.

Merasa tertantang, I joined the December batch.
Anyway, I managed to do it, dengan 2x cheating (harus laporan ke Vita kalo cheating) yaitu makan apel 1 buah di hari ke-2, dan makan pepaya sepotong di hari ke-7, that's it!
The Blekros Diet Menu

My progress, as reported to Vita via instagram
I was pleased with it, ya since saya kan ga gemuk-gemuk amat, jadi 4 kgs sudah sangat berpengaruh.. di celana terutama!
Buat yang mau ikutan blekros diet: http://www.blekrosdiet.com/
I highly recommend this program!

It was ok, tapi akhirnya saya memutuskan untuk ga berhenti dan mau coba maintain a good shape.
I joined Fitness First yang di PP.

FYI, saya bukan newbie untuk olahraga.
I was a swimming athlete dari SD-SMP, dan pernah juga nge-gym secara on-off 2005 sampe 2008, tapi berhenti begitu aja.

Mulai lah olahraga, go to the gym 2-3 times a week, awalnya cardio 20 menit dan ikut kelas Body Balance, lalu mulai angkat beban.

The more I know about those things, the more I know kalo kita itu sudah terlalu banyak konsumsi racun.

So there you go..
The reason I started blogging.
I want to share about my knowledge and experiences, khususnya tentang (but not limited to) "healthy lifestyle".

As I was inspired by healthy people, I want to inspire others too..
To live healthily.. To enjoy life in a good way..

"Hidup cuma sekali"? Bener banget!!
Hiduplah dengan sebaik-baiknya, sehingga sampai tua kita bisa hidup sehat, ga sakit-sakitan, ga ngerepotin anak-cucu kita dengan biaya pengobatan (knock on wood), dan bisa enjoy life to the fullest!
